An Overview of the Elliptical Cross Trainer

Exercise machines have been with us for quite some-time. Ever since man found a way of making simple apparatus that can help him exercise better and keep fit these devices have been around. A good example of such machine is the relatively new elliptical cross trainer. It is an exercise machine that is similar to the treadmill or even stationary exercise bicycle.

Another exercise machine that is worthy of mention, which also seem to be gaining some level of acceptability is the Pilates machine. By this, I am actually referring to not just one item, but different items that fall under this brand of exercise machine. Some of them are more popular than others and are being used by more and more people and can be found in gyms other than their tradition location of the Pilates studio.

Well an elliptical cross trainer otherwise known as an elliptical trainer or cross-trainer is a motionless exercise machine that is used to initiate walking or even running movement without causing undue pressure on the joints and therefore reducing the possibility of impact injuries.

On the other hand, the Pilates machine, which professional Pilates practitioner term apparatus or equipment can be sub-divided into two main categories: the small and portable devices like the magic circle, fitness band just to mention a few, while the other category; namely the large equipment pieces is made up of devices like the Pilates chair, reformer, barrel, etc.

The Pilates machine (equipment that fall under the two broad categories mentioned above) was designed or invented to help carry out a fitness regimen known as Pilates. Now Pilates is a physical fitness procedure developed by Joseph Pilates. It places importance on the body's development through flexibility, core strength and awareness so as to encourage efficient, smooth and graceful movement of the body.

The elliptical cross trainer on its part is an exercise machine that got into the market in the 1990s. It is designed to improve heart rate through cardiovascular workouts rather than develop the body muscles. Most of the cross trainers work on user's lower and upper body parts.

Elliptical trainers are mainly driven using the legs and most of them are designs that combine handle-levers, which are joined to each pedal-link in order to pass the burden to the arms so as to provide supplementary source of driving power.

There are like three generation types of elliptical cross trainer categorized according to the location of the drive or motor. The oldest design is the rear drive type, while the center drive is the latest design. In buying one prospective users should note that models which offer harmonious combination in the correct ratios between leg and arm exercise provide best results.
